Top Heriberto Hernandez News

  • Marlins' Heriberto Hernandez: Three hits in Sunday's loss

Hernandez went 3-for-3 with a run scored in Sunday's loss to the Rays.

Getting the start at DH and batting eighth, Hernandez produced the first three-hit performance of his brief MLB career. The 25-year-old has gone 6-for-11 over the last four games with two RBI and only one strikeout, but he's still looking for his first big-league extra-base hit. Hernandez's last two starts have come against right-handed pitching, a good sign for his chances of sticking around on the roster, but his playing time will likely decline once Kyle Stowers (hand) get healthy.

  • Marlins' Heriberto Hernandez: Produces first big-league hits

Hernandez went 2-for-3 with an RBI in Wednesday's loss to the Rockies.

After going 0-for-5 in his first three games for the Marlins, the 25-year-old rookie collected his first big-league hits and first RBI, with his seventh-inning single getting Miami on the board in a 3-2 loss. Hernandez has filled a short-side platoon role in the outfield since his late-May promotion, but he'll likely get bumped from the roster once Derek Hill (wrist) is healthy.

  • Marlins' Heriberto Hernandez: Added to big-league roster

The Marlins selected Hernandez's contract from Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday.

Hernandez has a .220/.319/.454 slash line with nine home runs and six steals through 41 games with Jacksonville this season, and he'll now receive his first taste of the big leagues. The 25-year-old was once viewed as a top prospect, but his contact skills haven't held up in the upper minors, as evidenced by the low batting average and 35 percent strikeout rate at Triple-A this year.

  • Marlins' Heriberto Hernandez: Getting call to big leagues

Hernandez will be promoted from Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday, Jeremiah Geiger of Locked on Marlins reports.

Hernandez was once a notable prospect in the Rays system, but he has become a bat-first right-handed hitter who made it to minor-league free agency in 2024. The 25-year-old left fielder/designated hitter has slashed .220/.319/.454 with nine home runs, six steals and a 35 percent strikeout rate in 41 games at Triple-A this season.

  • Marlins' Heriberto Hernandez: In camp with new club

Hernandez signed a minor-league deal with the Marlins in November.

Hernandez is starting in left field and batting ninth in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Astros. He was once a top prospect with the Rays but he slid down the defensive spectrum and hit .187 in 44 games at Triple-A last year.

  • Rays' Heriberto Hernandez: Laying waste to Double-A

Hernandez is slashing .288/.398/.621 with five home runs in 20 games for Double-A Montgomery.

Hernandez has an elite 38.1 percent hard-hit rate to go with an improved 24.1 percent strikeout rate -- he struck out 28 percent of the time in 118 games at Double-A last year. Since Hernandez is limited to left field and designated hitter, he needs to be very productive at the plate. It's a strong start to his age-24 campaign, but given Hernandez's age and the fact he is repeating the level, it would be nice to see how he stacks up against Triple-A pitching later this season.

  • Rays' Heriberto Hernandez: Dealt to Rays

Hernandez was traded from the Rangers to the Rays on Thursday in exchange for Nate Lowe, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.

Hernandez was added to the Rangers' 60-man roster pool for the final few weeks of the 2020 season, but he still hasn't played above rookie ball. He'll now continue his development with the Rays. Although Hernandez is several years away from major-league consideration, he's displayed intriguing power in the lower levels of the minors, posting a 1.088 OPS with 11 home runs and 49 RBI in 2019.

  • Rangers' Heriberto Hernandez: Joins roster pool

The Rangers added Hernandez to their 60-man roster pool Sept. 9, Jamey Newberg of The Athletic reports.

Hernandez becomes the sixth catcher added to Texas' roster pool, joining Jose Trevino (wrist), Jeff Mathis, Sam Huff, Tim Federowicz and Nick Ciuffo, although most evaluators expect Hernandez to end up as a corner outfielder or designated hitter long term. Trevino, Mathis and Huff are already a part of the 40-man roster, and given their prior big-league experience, Federowicz and Ciuffo are much more likely than Hernandez to receive a promotion if the Rangers are in need of another backstop over the final two weeks of the season. The 20-year-old Hernandez hasn't played above the rookie-ball level, but he boasts intriguing power that could make him a fantasy asset a few years down the road.
