  • Padres' Omar Cruz: Returned to El Paso

The Padres optioned Cruz to Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday.

Cruz got his first big-league call Sunday since being optioned to El Paso on April 5, but the left-hander didn't take the mound during his three-game stint in San Diego. He'll cede his spot on the 26-man roster to make room for Kyle Hart to start Wednesday's game against the Marlins.

  • Padres' Omar Cruz: Back in majors

The Padres recalled Cruz from Triple-A El Paso on Sunday.

The left-hander cracked San Diego's Opening Day roster but was sent down in early April after making just two appearances in the majors. Cruz is rejoining the Padres as bullpen depth Sunday after posting a 3.20 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 21:17 K:BB across 19.2 innings with El Paso.

  • Padres' Omar Cruz: Sent to Triple-A

The Padres optioned Cruz to Triple-A El Paso on Sunday.

Cruz was unlikely to be available for at least a few days after tossing 2.2 innings and 68 pitches in relief in Saturday's 7-1 loss to the Cubs, so the Padres elected to swap him off the active roster for a fresh bullpen arm in right-hander Logan Gillaspie, whose contract was selected from Triple-A. San Diego designated left-hander Tom Cosgrove for assignment to open up a spot on the 40-man roster for Gillaspie.

  • Padres' Omar Cruz: Recalled from Triple-A

The Padres recalled Cruz from Triple-A El Paso on Thursday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

Cruz was optioned to minor-league camp in mid-March but wound up cracking the Opening Day roster. He'll be making his major-league debut when/if he gets into a game.

  • Padres' Omar Cruz: Could be on Opening Day roster

Cruz is working out with the Padres at Petco Park on Wednesday and could be included on their Opening Day roster, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Cruz was optioned to minor-league camp in mid-March, but it looks like he will wind up making the team after all. The left-hander would be making his major-league debut if he gets into a game.

  • Padres' Omar Cruz: Optioned to minor-league camp

The Padres optioned Cruz to Triple-A El Paso on Thursday.

Cruz reached Triple-A for the first time last season, where he logged a 4.42 ERA and 1.47 WHIP over 38.2 frames. He performed a bit better in the Cactus League, surrendering just one run in five innings, but San Diego will need a larger sample size from him at El Paso before granting him a bullpen spot.

  • Padres' Omar Cruz: Selected to 40-man roster

The Padres selected Cruz to their 40-man roster Tuesday.

Cruz's addition to the 40-man roster will prevent him from being selected by another organization during December's Rule 5 Draft. However, he only managed a 4.42 ERA and 1.47 WHIP in his first season at Triple-A, so a promotion to the major leagues may still be a ways away.

Cruz was sidelined for about a month with an elbow injury. For the season, the 23-year-old lefty owns a 5.47 ERA and 1.44 WHIP across 52.2 innings with Altoona.

  • Pirates' Omar Cruz: Placed on injured list

Cruz was placed on the 7-day minor-league injured list with an elbow injury Thursday, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports.

Cruz has been at Double-A Altoona to begin the season, and he's posted a 5.51 ERA, 57:23 K:BB and 1.45 WHIP in 50.2 innings over 17 appearances (five starts). The severity of the 23-year-old's elbow issue isn't yet clear, but he'll be forced to miss at least a week.
