  • Royals' Cole Ragans: Set for second opinion

Ragans will get a second opinion on his shoulder injury next week, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. After landing on the injured list Wednesday, Ragans underwent initial imaging on his left shoulder that confirmed a strain. The Royals believe that he will avoid surgery for the time being, though manager Matt Quatraro admitted that nothing will be conclusive until further testing occurs. There is no timeline for Ragans' return, but he will almost certainly be sidelined for longer than the minimum 15 days.

  • Royals' Cole Ragans: Hits IL with rotator cuff strain

The Royals placed Ragans on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with a left rotator cuff strain. Ragans last pitched Thursday, getting knocked around for five runs over three innings in St. Louis in his first start back from a groin injury. It's not clear whether he suffered the rotator cuff injury during that outing or sometime since then, but either way, it's an injury that will likely sideline him longer than the minimum 15 days. Ragans' move to the IL should extend rookie Noah Cameron's stay in the rotation.

  • Royals' Cole Ragans: Struggles in return

Ragans (groin) allowed five runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four over three innings in a no-decision in Game 2 of Thursday's doubleheader versus the Royals. Ragans squandered a four-run lead in the third inning, and that was enough to end his first start back after missing nearly three weeks with the groin injury. He wasn't very sharp, throwing just 47 of 78 pitches for strikes in his return. The southpaw has gone no more than five innings in any of his last six outings, and he's given up at least four runs in five of them. He's at a 5.18 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 76:16 K:BB through 48.2 innings over 10 starts this season. Ragans is tentatively projected to make his next start at home in a tough matchup against the Yankees.

  • Royals' Cole Ragans: Officially back on mound

The Royals reinstated Ragans (groin) from the injured list Thursday. Ragans is set to take the mound Thursday in St. Louis for the second part of a doubleheader. This will be the southpaw's first start since May 16 when he injured his groin. In a corresponding move, the Royals designated Thomas Hatch for assignment.

  • Royals' Cole Ragans: Rejoining rotation Thursday

Ragans (groin) is scheduled to be reinstated from the 15-day injured list to start Thursday against the Cardinals, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Ragans allowed four earned runs over 3.2 innings during his rehab start with Double-A Northwest Arkansas on Saturday, and he apparently showed enough for Kansas City to put him on a big-league mound for his next outing. The 27-year-old will end up missing little more than the 15-day minimum due to groin soreness, though he could still face some minor workload limitations in his first start back in the big leagues.

  • Royals' Cole Ragans: Starting rehab assignment

Ragans (groin) will report to Double-A Northwest Arkansas to begin a rehab assignment Saturday. The left-hander is eligible to come off the injured list Sunday, but he won't quite be ready to rejoin the Royals. Given the brevity of Ragans' absence, he may only need one outing in the minors before being re-inserted into Kansas City's rotation.

  • Royals' Cole Ragans: Throwing bullpen, rehab start soon

Ragans (groin) is throwing a two-up bullpen Wednesday and is then expected to make a rehab start this weekend, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Ragans has been on the injured list since May 17 and becomes eligible for reinstatement Sunday, but it seems as though he'll need more time before rejoining the active roster. The Royals haven't announced their full plans, but the left-hander may only need one rehab start before being activated given the brevity of his absence.

  • Royals' Cole Ragans: Completes side session Sunday

Ragans (groin) threw a "competitive" bullpen session Sunday, MLB.com reports. Ragans is eligible to return from the 15-day injured list this Sunday, but the Royals haven't officially confirmed that he'll be ready to go by that day. That said, after checking out fine following the bullpen session, Ragans looks to be on track for a minimum-length stay on the shelf. The Royals may want Ragans to complete another bullpen session or possibly a live batting practice session before deciding on his next step. Daniel Lynch will make his second start Tuesday against the Reds but is likely to move back to the bullpen once Ragans is activated.

  • Royals' Cole Ragans: Playing catch

Ragans (groin) has been playing catch and is expected to return from the injured list when eligible June 1, MLB.com reports. Ragans exited his start May 16 due to left groin tightness, but it sounds like he'll miss the minimum amount of time. He has a 4.53 ERA this season but an excellent 72:13 K:BB in 45.2 innings.

  • Royals' Cole Ragans: Moved to 15-day IL

Kansas City placed Ragans (groin) on the 15-day injured list Saturday. Ragans exited his start Friday versus St. Louis due to left groin tightness, and the issue has resulted in a trip to the IL. Seth Lugo (finger) also landed on the IL on Saturday, so the Royals' rotation is suddenly quite thin. Noah Cameron was called up from Triple-A to start Saturday and will likely get additional turns in the rotation, but it's unclear at this point how Kansas City will fill the other starting slot.

  • Royals' Cole Ragans: Battling groin tightness

Ragans exited Friday's game against St. Louis due to left groin tightness. Ragans gave up four runs in five-plus innings before an athletic trainer took him out of the game. The left-hander is tentatively scheduled to make his next start Wednesday in San Francisco, though it's unclear if he'll be able to do so.

  • Royals' Cole Ragans: Exits with trainer

Ragans was removed from his start Friday against the Cardinals with an apparent injury, Jaylon T. Thompson of The Kansas City Star reports. Ragans' fastball was noticeably down in the sixth inning, and after allowing a leadoff single to Masyn Winn, the 27-year-old southpaw left the game alongside a trainer. The Royals will presumably take a closer look at him to determine what's wrong, and he can be considered day-to-day until the team provides an update. Ragans finished Friday's contest with four earned runs allowed on five hits and zero walks with seven strikeouts across five-plus frames.

  • Royals' Cole Ragans: Punches out eight in loss

Ragans (2-2) took the loss against the Red Sox on Saturday, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out eight over five innings. Ragans gave up one run through the first four innings, but he was tagged for three more in the fifth on three consecutive RBI singles. He generated 14 whiffs on 95 pitches (65 strikes), and while he's recorded at least eight strikeouts in six of eight starts this season, he has also yielded at least four earned runs in three of his last four outings. Ragans has a 4.20 ERA and 1.23 WHIP over 40.2 innings, and his 65 strikeouts is tied with Garrett Crochet for second most in the American League behind Carlos Rodon (67). Ragans is lined up to face the Cardinals at home next weekend.

  • Royals' Cole Ragans: Dominant in second win

Ragans (2-1) picked up the win Monday against the White Sox, allowing three hits and two walks over five scoreless innings. He struck out 11. The Kansas City southpaw showed no ill effects of his recent groin injury, stymying the lowly Chicago lineup in this 94-pitch outing. Ragans generated an impressive 17 whiffs to match his season high in strikeouts with 11. After allowing an unsightly nine runs over seven innings across his two previous starts, Ragans lowered his ERA from 4.40 to 3.79 with this performance. The left-hander is currently slated to make his next start against the Red Sox at home this weekend.

  • Royals' Cole Ragans: Set to start Monday

Ragans (groin) is scheduled to start Monday's game against the White Sox, Jaylon T. Thompson of The Kansas City Star reports. The 27-year-old hasn't pitched since April 24 due to a groin strain, but he's poised to take the mound Monday after missing just one turn through the rotation. Ragans has surrendered nine runs in his past two starts, but he was dominant in his first four outings of the season with a 2.28 ERA and 34:4 K:BB across 23.2 innings.

  • Royals' Cole Ragans: Throwing bullpen session Friday

Ragans (groin) will throw a bullpen session Friday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. A mild left groin strain kept Ragans from making his scheduled start Wednesday versus the Rays, but as long as he gets through Friday's bullpen session without issue, he'll rejoin the Royals rotation Monday against the White Sox. Noah Cameron -- who started Wednesday in Ragans' place -- has already been sent back down to Triple-A Omaha, suggesting the club feels confident Ragans will be ready to go Monday, although Cameron could technically rejoin the big club that day if Ragans goes on the IL. However, all indications are that an IL stint will not be necessary for Ragans.

  • Royals' Cole Ragans: Missing start Wednesday

Royals manager Matt Quatraro said Ragans (groin) will not make his next scheduled start Wednesday at Tampa Bay, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. The Royals will call up lefty Noah Cameron from Triple-A Omaha to start Wednesday in place of Ragans. After being pulled from his start last Thursday against the Rockies after three innings, Ragans was diagnosed Friday with a mild left groin strain. Per Rogers, Ragans' groin strain has improved each day since he suffered the injury, so for now, he's expected to avoid the injured list. He could be ready to make his next start as soon as this weekend in Baltimore or early next week versus the White Sox in Kansas City.

  • Royals' Cole Ragans: Leaves start with groin injury

Ragans was removed from his start Thursday against the Rockies due to groin tightness. Ragans made it through just three innings in the first game of Thursday's twin bill, during which he surrendered four runs on three hits (including two homers) and two walks while punching out four batters. The Royals haven't offered any specifics on the severity of the left-hander's injury, so it's unknown if he'll be able to make his next scheduled start against the Rays next week, but he'll presumably undergo tests in the near future to determine his availability.

  • Royals' Cole Ragans: Takes first loss

Ragans (1-1) took the loss Friday against the Tigers after giving up five earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out eight batters across four-plus innings. Pitching at an 18 K/9 pace typically indicates a strong performance from a pitcher, but that was just about the only positive thing Ragans had going for him Friday. He squandered an early lead by allowing an RBI single in the second inning and began pitching from behind after giving up a solo shot to Andy Ibanez in the fourth. Ragans came back out for the start of the fifth frame but was quickly pulled after allowing the first three batters to reach base, all of whom eventually came around to score. The swing-and-miss specialist now carries a 3.58 ERA following his tough outing, though he should have a good chance to bounce back during his next start against a Rockies lineup that strikes out 10.8 times per game.

  • Royals' Cole Ragans: Fans 10 in win

Ragans (1-0) allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits over 7.2 innings Sunday, striking out 10 and earning a win over Cleveland. Ragans stumbled in the second inning, giving up an RBI double to Daniel Schneemann, who would come around to score on an error. After that, Ragans was dialed in and retired 18 of the next 19 batters he faced. He forced 20 whiffs and has generated at least 16 in three straight outings. The 27-year-old is sporting a 2.28 ERA with a terrific 34:4 K:BB through four starts. Ragans' next start is expected to be in Detroit.
